Creating a Good Relationship with Your Doctor

Life becomes so much easier when you can enjoy good health. Not to mention, you don’t have to worry constantly about your blood pressure climbing too high or any other number of issues that could happen if you haven’t maintained your health. Creating a good relationship with your doctor is a big factor in living a healthy life. Here are a few tips to help strengthen that partnership.

Choose the Right Doctor

Creating a doctor-patient relationship starts with finding the right doctor. Ask your friends and family for referrals so you can begin with a list of options. From there, call the doctors’ offices to ask about training, experience and health insurance coverage. You may wish to narrow your list to two or three doctors, who you can then go visit. The right doctor should be knowledgeable enough to answer your questions and respectful enough to make you feel comfortable. a laptop computer sitting on top of a table

Take Care of Yourself

Once you’ve selected a doctor, you should plan to get a physical exam each year to keep track of your health. Why? The overall picture of your health involves much more than what you see on the outside. With your doctor’s advice and guidance, you can manage your health between visits. In order to best advise you, your doctor will need access to your medical records, along with a list of your prescription medications. Be sure to discuss any concerns and ask your doctor how to address them. Your doctor is a fantastic resource, but it’s up to you to take care of yourself.

Communicate Openly

During doctor appointments, listen carefully to the advice you’re given. And if a question pops into your head during the exam, speak up and ask it. If it helps, you can take notes so you know how to best maintain your health throughout the year. If you have questions or concerns between visits to your doctor, don’t hesitate to call for advice. The more your doctor knows about what’s going on with your health, the more he or she can help you stay in peak condition.

Visiting a doctor starts with the right coverage. Call Two Rivers Benefits Consultants at 732-842-6200 for more information on health insurance.
