Missed an Auto Insurance Payment: What to Do Now

Making on-time payments to your auto insurance company is critical.

Usually, making your payment at one time to cover the entire coverage period is best. If that’s not possible, many insurers allow you to make monthly payments. However, missing just one of those payments can lead to the cancellation of your policy. What should you do if the check wasn’t in the mail in time?

Contact Your Car Insurance Provider First

Don’t delay in contacting your insurer. Inform them of the mistake. Ask them what steps you can take to make payment.  a close up of a motorcycle

You may avoid cancellation if you are only a few days late. If your policy went unpaid for longer, your insurer may cancel the plan. It’s important to contact them immediately to get payments caught up.

Going without car insurance even for a day can be problematic. Insurance companies often raise rates for those who have missed payments. Additionally, your current insurer may no longer wish to provide coverage to you. Most auto insurance companies are completely understanding. They know that sometimes payments come in late. However, if you continue to make late payments, they may cancel your coverage. This could put you at risk of violating coverage requirements in your state.

Avoiding Late Payments

The better option is to avoid making late payments whenever possible. You can reduce this risk in many ways:

  • Set up auto payment. Let your insurer pull the funds directly out of your bank account before they are due.

  • Pay your policy in full instead of in monthly payments. You may save a few dollars doing this as well.

  • Pay a month in advance. This can give you a bit of a cushion for late payments.

Being able to pay for your auto insurance online can help you minimize this risk. Talk to your auto insurance agent right away if you think there may be a lapse in coverage. It can be expensive to get back into a plan.

Most companies will provide you with advanced warning of the cancellation. And, if you are having trouble making your payment, let your car insurance provider know that. They may be able to help you find lower rates from a modified policy. Keeping your coverage on time and in line is critical. It helps you meet all legal requirements and reduces your risks.
